This edition of AASR Researcher of the Month features Rev. Margarate Salli Effungani Ph.D, of St. Paul’s University, Limuru, Kenya. Dr Effungani recounts her academic journey as a researcher in interfaith relations, intercultural and gender studies.
Tell us about yourself, your academic background and research interests.
I have been an ordained minister of the Presbyterian church in Cameroon (PCC) since 2010. I am the Programme Officer for the Programme for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa (PROCMURA), sitting at the central office in Nairobi, Kenya, since 2017. I am also an adjunct lecturer with St. Paul’s University, Limuru.
My academic background is in interfaith relations, intercultural studies, religion, peace and development, freedom of religion and belief, and gender studies. I hold a bachelor’s Theology from Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Kumba, Cameroon (2007–2010), Master’s in Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations from St Paul’s University, Limuru, Kenya (2013–2015, A masters in Development Studies, from St Paul’s University, Limuru, Kenya (2023-2025) and a PhD in Religious Studies from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Kenya (2016–2018)

My research interests are in the areas of Interfaith relations/dialogue, intercultural studies, religion, peace and development, Freedom of religion and belief, and gender issues in religion.
Tell us a little bit more about your recently published book.
The book, titled The Theology of Development: Faith as an Asset for Transformative and Sustainable Development, is a Critical Theological Engagement with Contemporary Development Theory and Practice. This book argues that authentic human development, understood in its fullest sagacity, is fundamentally a theological enterprise rooted in God’s creative and redemptive purposes for humanity and creation. Development, when viewed through the lens of Christian faith, transcends mere economic growth or social progress to encompass the restoration of right relationships with God, with one another, with oneself, and with creation. This theological vision of development challenges reductionist approaches while offering a transformative framework that honours both divine initiative and human agency in the pursuit of flourishing communities.
The thesis unfolds across three interconnected dimensions. First, the biblical narrative provides a coherent vision of human flourishing that encompasses material, social, and spiritual dimensions of life. Second, the church, as the body of Christ, bears a particular responsibility and possesses unique resources for catalysing integral human development. Third, that a theologically informed approach to development offers critical insights for addressing contemporary challenges of poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation while maintaining hope grounded in eschatological promise.
In what ways do you think your research addresses pressing societal challenges?
This book addresses pressing societal challenges by offering a holistic, theological perspective on human development that seeks to restore relationships among individuals, communities, and the environment. It moves beyond conventional measures of progress or development, emphasising the importance of material, social, and spiritual well-being as interconnected dimensions of flourishing. This approach critically engages contemporary issues such as poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation, proposing that development should align with God’s creative and redemptive purposes. Additionally, it highlights the unique role of the church in catalysing integral human development, leveraging its resources and responsibilities to foster transformation in communities. By providing a framework that honours both divine initiative and human agency, this book inspires actionable solutions that not only tackle immediate challenges but also long-term sustainable development, having the well-being of humanity at the center.
How do you see your career/research develop and evolve in the near future?
I envision my research career evolving to continuously address emerging issues while focusing on the intersection of theology, development, and societal issues. By fostering dialogue between academia and local communities, I aim to inspire transformative actions that resonate with God’s purpose and contribute to sustainable, flourishing communities. This approach will not only enhance my understanding of pressing societal challenges, such as poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability, but also empower communities to engage in integral human development. As I collaborate with various stakeholders, I anticipate developing innovative strategies that connect theological principles with practical solutions, ultimately leading to impactful change and growth in both my research and the communities I serve. Now that I am a member of the AASR, I look forward to tapping into the growth opportunities this platform will offer me.
From your wealth of experience, what advice would you give to your younger self?
Drawing on my wealth of experience, I would advise my younger self to embrace curiosity and be open to interdisciplinary research approaches. It’s essential to recognise that impactful research often transcends traditional boundaries, integrating insights from various fields to address complex issues effectively. Additionally, I would emphasise the importance of building relationships within academic and local communities, as collaboration can lead to richer perspectives and innovative solutions. Don’t hesitate to pursue challenging topics that ignite your passion, and remember that failure is a valuable part of the learning process. Each setback can provide critical lessons that contribute to your growth. Lastly, stay grounded in your values and purpose, allowing them to guide your research trajectory and inspire meaningful contributions to society.
What role has the AASR played in your career growth?
The AASR has played a significant role in my career development, serving as a vital resource for mentorship from its members in diverse ways. I am excited about the opportunity to attend my first conference, where I hope to connect with more individuals who can offer academic support as I continue to advance in my research journey.
Tell us the challenge(s) you encountered in your career and how you surmounted them. What lessons did you learn?
One of the significant challenges I have encountered throughout my career has been the limited availability of resources for conducting extensive empirical research and for publication support. To address this challenge, I have actively submitted abstracts in response to calls for papers, which has helped alleviate some of the pressures associated with publication. Additionally, I have sought out funding and support by submitting research proposals to various organisations and churches, some of which have provided valuable assistance. However, much of my publication work has been self-funded.
As a member of the AASR, I can now submit my articles to the Utambuzi Journal at no cost, which greatly supports my research and facilitates the dissemination of my work. Through these experiences, I have learned the importance of sharing my research ideas with peers and established professionals in the field, rather than keeping them to myself. Collaboration and open communication can lead to greater opportunities and insights that significantly enhance one’s academic journey.
